Charity “Wants to recognise Teacher contribution”

Education charity EDT has launched a national award to help recognise the nearly 2000 teachers that make such an important contribution to helping run the EDT programmes each year. EDT programmes engage over 25,000 secondary school pupils each year in work-related STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) learning programmes across more than 1700 schools.

The nominations for the award will be driven by the EDT regional offices that work day to day with the teachers and see the contribution that they make. The key criteria for the awards are

  • Longevity with regards to EDT involvement
  • Involvement with multiple EDT programmes
  • Embedding of EDT programmes within the school
  • Input into the EDT in an advisory capacity, e.g. assisting in the piloting of new schemes
  • Track record of promoting STEM to young people
  • Evidence of impact assessment and programme development
  • Raising EDT profile with other schools and organisations
  • Mentoring new EDT teachers

The criteria ensure that as a result of their involvement with EDT the teacher has had considerable impact on the development of the STEM curriculum across all secondary key stages.  Integral to this curriculum development will be the improvement in personal skills and raising of STEM careers awareness among pupils.

Mark Williams, EDT’s Education Director says, “The teachers involved in the EDT programmes put many hours into ensuring their pupils gain maximum benefit from the experience of working on projects with mentors from industry. Teachers tell us that they make excellent contacts and have good CPD from running the programmes, but we wanted to develop an award that recognised the effort that teachers put into ensuring their pupils get the experiences which enable them to make informed decisions on whether a career in Science or Engineering is for them. It is vital that pupils are properly engaged at every stage of their school careers, because from a very early stage they are making subject choices that could preclude them from a STEM career in which they might be highly successful.”

The inaugural EDT Teacher Award, was presented in 2011 to Peter Crompton of Fortismere School in the London Borough of Haringay. Peter has been involved in EDT programmes since 1994 and he is involved in some way in every EDT scheme. As well as regularly involving Fortismere teams in EDT programmes Peter has played an active role in helping EDT develop and trial new programmes and has contributed to various support and advisory groups for the organisation. Alongside all this, Peter also acts as a mentor to teachers in other schools helping them to get the best from EDT’s Go4SET programme for Year 8/9 (S2 in Scotland).

Mark Williams says, “There could not be a more worthy recipient of the first EDT Teachers Award than Peter Crompton but we are looking forward to recognising the work of many more excellent teachers with regional and national awards over many years to come.”
