Leading entrepreneur says start-up businesses shouldnt be put off by election uncertainty.

Stefan Töpfer , Chairman of WinWeb, the leading online office suppliers, and regular commentator in the business media, says that start-up businesses have little to fear from the uncertainty around the general election and should make the jump into business if they have confidence in their business idea.

Stefan says, “Let’s be realistic – whenever the election is and whatever party wins it the implications for a start up business are going to be negligible in the short to medium term. Nobody can say with any certainty what the effects of different party’s policies are going to be on the economy and it is going to be even more months before they work themselves out. There is always a reason to procrastinate about starting a business but the truth is that if your business idea is strong enough and your ability to put it into action is good, whatever the vagaries of what politicians do or don’t do – your business will survive.”

Töpfer’s comments contrast with those of Theo Paphitis, from Dragon’s Den who when interviewed on BBC Working Lunch in January advised potential entrepreneurs to hold off until the business policies of the various party’s were clearer. However, Töpfer’s is certain his is the right course.

“Whether the road is going to be smooth or bumpy it is clear that the UK economy is steadily moving out of recession over the next two years and those establishing businesses now will be able to gain the benefits of being part of an up-curve. I have always advocated that businesses should bootstrap to ensure they minimise their start-up costs so the risks of failure are minimised but you will never achieve anything by sitting on your hands. If you think your business idea is sound, go for it or you will never know.

Many things are in your favour at present, commercial property prices are low, many good potential employees are on the job market having been made redundant, finance is cheap and lots of suppliers will offer you great long term deals to get your business. Hold off until things are “less risky” and all these great advantages will be gone.”
