Visitors to the Packaging Innovations show at the NEC (24-25 Feb) would be advised to talk with experts from Design Cognition if they don’t want to fall foul of the law. It is estimated that 20% of pharmaceutical companies could have their products taken off the market as a direct consequence of non-compliance. During the show, Design Cognition will provide a limited number of
FREE 15 minute advisory sessions to visitors who book in advance via email to packagingsurgery@designcognition.com
One example of a change in the law is the mandatory introduction of Braille onto the packaging of virtually all pharmaceutical products by October 2010. This change will dramatically increase the safety and sense of security of the many blind and partially sighted Braille users across Europe, but is giving suppliers and packaging developers plenty to think about.
“I am still surprised at the number of companies who aren’t up to speed with packaging legislation,” says Design Cognition CEO Chris Penfold. “In 7 months time Braille becomes mandatory on the packaging of pharmaceutical products. Firms will need to take, and act, on advice quickly to avoid costly mistakes and to get their designs submitted to the appropriate Regulatory Authority and incorporate onto their packaging on time.”
Chris will be joined at the show by Chief Technical Director Anne Dallison who is a member of the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) working group on Braille standards. She will be able to talk visitors through the new legislation and help them develop an understanding of the business requirements.
“There has been reluctance in the past by some in the pharmaceutical industry to incorporate Braille, but this is going to have to change,” says Anne. “The penalties for non-compliance are serious so we are very happy to talk to those who need help.”
Design Cognition works with global brands to create innovative ways of tackling new packaging demands. In the area of sustainability, both Chris Penfold and Anne Dallison are recognized as IOM3 Chartered Environmentalists and are committed to helping clients maintain brand visibility whilst helping the planet.
Design Cognition will be on Stand 582 at easyFairs Packaging Innovations show. Numbers for the FREE 15 minute advisory session will be limited and allocated on a first come first served basis, so to reserve your place now just email packagingsurgery@designcognition.com.
