Working Gap Year numbers bounce back but student attitudes have changed

Working gap year ‘The Year in Industry’ is reporting a big increase in applications after university fee issues pegged back demand last year. The paid gap year, run by education charity EDT, is seeing increases of over 45% in applications from pre-university students, with a core recruitment period still ahead. However, the National Director for ‘The Year in Industry’, Chris Ward reports that the high cost of university degrees is still a major factor, prompting a more focused attitude from applicants.

Derbyshire Garden opens for African relief project

Fanshawe Gate Hall garden in Holmesfield will open to the public on Sunday 6th May to raise funds to provide aid for the people of Burkina Faso, West Africa following recent floods. Over 100,000 people have lost their homes and livelihood and the plan is to help those living in the 25 worst affected areas to rebuild their lives over the next two years.

Fit for Work Service Hits 1000 Referrals

A pilot service that helps people at risk of long term sickness absence to return to work, has just received its 1000th referral from the GPs and other health professionals working in Leicestershire. Leicestershire Fit for Work was established as a pilot programme funded by central government in 2010. The objective of the pilot was to demonstrate the effectiveness of early intervention to help people return to work who were otherwise likely to fall into a pattern of long term sickness absence and subsequently lose their employment.
