Business angel investing is changing. Once it was largely a solo activity, undertaken below the radar. Now angels are increasingly joining together in manager-led angel groups to invest together. New research from the University of Glasgow’s Adam Smith Business School takes an in-depth look angel investing in the light of these changes. With responses from 238 members of 71 angel groups, the report is claimed by its authors, Professor Colin Mason and doctoral student Tiago Botelho to be the largest independent survey of business angels in the UK.

The top national award for “The Year in Industry” 2014 has been won by Jack Patterson, a Mechanical Engineering student at Sunderland University, as a result of his impressive work with Washington based Orwin, one of the biggest automation and special purpose machine builders in the UK. Jack, from Blyth in Northumberland, won the award as National Winner 2014, sponsored by the Lloyds Register Foundation.

Nottingham-based Scientific Laboratory Supplies Ltd (SLS), the UK’s largest independent supplier of scientific equipment, chemicals and consumables, has donated nearly £3,000 worth of medical supplies and protective equipment to help the Ebola crisis in West Africa. Working through the charity International Health Partnership (IHP), the SLS items were transported free-of-charge by Nottingham company PSJ Couriers to a dedicated DHL depot in Banbury. The consignment will be transported overland by surface freight and is due to reach the African continent by mid-October. On arrival the items will be managed to their final destination by the charity partner International Aid Trust.
Just twelve days ahead of the historic vote on Scottish independence, Nottingham Speakers’ Corner will provide the opportunity for everyone to contribute to the open air debate; ‘Scotland & the United Kingdom – partnership or partition?’ The debate takes place at 11.00 on Saturday 6 September in King Street and will include Scots, academics and Nottingham residents. BBC East Midlands politics editor John Hess will chair the discussion which will include ample opportunity for anyone with a keen interest in the issues to contribute.
A unique duo of father and son will compete for Team GB in the Cross Triathlon World Championships in Germany this month. David Browning is the director of MediCity, the UK’s rapidly-expanding health, beauty and wellness innovation hub based on the Boots site in Nottingham and has been selected to compete alongside his son Nick. The two are being sponsored by MediCity company Natural Hero, the supplier of natural body rubs and sprays for sports training and recovery.
Midlands-based audio-visual hire and events production company Quadrant Events has appointed Integra Communications Ltd to handle the company’s regional and UK-wide public relations and media communications from August 2014. Account Director Louise Third will work alongside the senior management team as the company builds its reputation for the planning and delivery of major conferences and events across the UK.
